Manhattan is a veritable treasure trove when it comes to children's theater. From spectacular Broadway musicals to live-action shows starring Elmo and his furry friends to small-scale original productions, the city really is a theater-going kid's oyster. Among these fantastic offerings, Pinkalicious the Musical stands out as a real pearl. This charming musical brings to life the popular children's book, Pinkalicious, by sisters Elizabeth and Victoria Kann, which tells the tale of a little girl who can't resist the urge to devour as many pink cupcakes as possible. Hilarity ensues when Pinkalicious sneaks so many pink cupcakes that she develops a case of "pinkatitis". Her mother and father are exasperated, her little brother is jealous and Pinkalicious is, well, tickled pink! But when she takes things a step too far, Pinkalicious turns red and must figure a way out of her colorful predicament. My daughter Sadie and I recently were invited to check out the show, and we made a thoroughly enjoyable "mommy and me" outing of it. It truly was one of those special experiences I'll always remember sharing with her. If you're looking for a large-scale, flashy Broadway production, look elsewhere. Pinkalicious is children's theater as it should be - intimate, approachable, lighthearted and sweet. My typically squirmy daughter was completely mesmerized, staying in her seat through the entire performance, save for the times she sprung up to dance and clap to the music. Indeed, our entire Pinkalicious experience was seamless, beginning in the lobby, where the show's producers smartly offer an array of Pinkalicious-themed merchandise and, of course, pink cupcakes, for sale. Sadie devoured a pink cupcake before the show even began and, despite the show's warning against over indulging in these pink treats, demanded one after the show as well! Getting there was a snap too, as the theater is located directly across the street from the 6 train, and the restrooms are even located next to the stage, so if your little one feels the urge during the show you'll hardly miss a beat. After the show, kids get to enjoy a meet-and-greet with the entire cast, who sign autographs and pose for pictures. Sadie was beyond thrilled to get up close and personal with Pinkalicious and, even now, several weeks later, she's still asking when she'll be seeing the show again. But don't just take my (or Sadie's) word for it - go see Pinkalicious for yourself and experience the joy of this delightful production. You can purchase tickets by clicking here.
